Leora the Sea Witch
Handmade Sea Witch sculpture:
This is "Leora" and her story:
Leora means "my light" or "I have light" in Hebrew and Greek.
Leora is a Sea Witch that lives deep in the Great Dismal Swamp which provides a perfect place of seclusion for her. She is an ancient being and her life in the swamp is the stuff legends and folklore are made from. There are tales of strange lights, ghosts, a ghostly maiden in a white canoe, etc. Leora is a part of these tales, she usually stays hidden but when people stray too deep into the swamp and become lost, or if they are using the swamp to hide from danger (as with eacaped slaves) she uses her light to guide them to safety. She stays far enough away, that she appears to be an aberration leading people to say they had seen a ghost.
Each sculpture is a unique mixed media work of art using fabrics, and natural elements collected from my local beach. She stands approx 24 inches tall. I use a fabric hardener product to produce the sculptured effect. This sculpture has been sealed with a wax-based varnish and she is able to be outside if you desire. Her lighted staff is solar powered and the light part is removable so that it can be charged by sunlight.
