Meaning: broken by magic with a Welsh origin
Long ago, Nimue was a young bride, deeply and fiercely in love with her husband. Before settling into the quiet rhythms of everyday life, the two set sail together for a distant and exotic island, seeking one last adventure upon the open sea. Their days were filled with laughter, and their nights with dreams of the life that awaited them when they returned home.
But the sea is as unpredictable as it is beautiful.
On their return voyage, a violent tempest rose from the darkening horizon. Towering waves crashed against the ship as winds howled like restless spirits. Amid the chaos, Nimue searched frantically for her beloved, but the storm swallowed his voice and the sea hid him from her sight.
As the ship began to sink beneath the raging waters and the cold sea closed around her, terror seized Nimue’s heart. In her desperation she cried out, cursing the ocean itself and screaming her defiance to the great sea goddess Amphitrite, declaring that she would not die in the depths.
The goddess heard.
Angered by such mortal fury, Amphitrite answered with a cruel enchantment. Nimue would not drown. She would not fade. Instead, she would live forever—bound to the tides and the endless passing of time.
The curse did not grant her peace.
Nimue’s heart was shattered by the loss of the love she could never find again. Yet one small treasure keeps her from surrendering completely to sorrow: a delicate watch locket given to her by her husband on their wedding day. Its quiet ticking is a gentle reminder of a life once filled with warmth and love.
When the loneliness grows too heavy and the darkness of the deep threatens to claim her spirit, Nimue holds the locket close and remembers what it felt like to be loved.
And so she wanders still—between sea and shore, between memory and time—broken by magic, yet not entirely lost.
